Madame Blavatsky: The Original Crystal Mom with a God Complex

Long before Gwyneth Paltrow started selling overpriced moon juice, there was Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, the 19th-century queen of esoteric nonsense who could out-incense your yoga teacher with her eyes closed. Known to her fans (and cultish followers) as Madame Blavatsky, she co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 — because why believe in one religion when you can cherry-pick the weirdest parts of all of them?

Born in Russia and raised on mystery novels and zero scientific evidence, Blavatsky was a self-proclaimed psychic, medium, and mystic who insisted she had traveled to Tibet and studied with ancient masters. Never mind that no one could confirm this trip and that her idea of “Tibetan wisdom” often sounded suspiciously like Victorian orientalism sprinkled with vaguely Sanskrit-sounding gibberish. But hey, details are for skeptics.

Her magnum opus, The Secret Doctrine, is the kind of book you'd get if a conspiracy theorist and a fantasy novelist got high in a pyramid. It claims humanity descended from ethereal root races and that Atlantis was real — which, surprisingly, some Reddit threads still believe.

Critics called her a fraud, plagiarist, and all-around scammer, but Blavatsky shrugged it off with dramatic flair, possibly while channeling the spirit of a 5,000-year-old Atlantean named Steve. In many ways, she paved the way for today’s self-styled spiritual influencers — only she did it without Instagram filters and with way more incense.

So next time your friend invites you to a sound bath under a full moon, say, "Yes, please", and thank Madame Blavatsky — the OG mystic hustle queen.
