In the summer of 1993, Fugazi was playing a massive, free outdoor show at Fort Reno Park in Washington, D.C. They had just charted on Billboard with their album In on the Killtaker, so the crowd was huge, and a lot of new, rowdier fans had shown up.
A few songs into the set, a couple of heavy-set, tough-guy "skinhead" types up front started aggressively punching and kicking people in the crowd. True to form, Ian MacKaye stopped the band cold. He pointed them out in front of thousands of people and started giving them a standard, stern talking-to:
"Hey, don't kick people and don't punch people. I'm talking to you right there. You want to do that stuff, get up on the football field, all right?"
The tough guys stood there, crossing their arms, trying to look menacing and unfazed by the singer's lecture. They were trying to project pure, hardcore intimidation.
That's when co-frontman Guy Picciotto stepped up to his microphone.
Picciotto had been watching these same two guys earlier in the day. He leaned into the mic and called them out on live tape with one of the greatest, most devastatingly funny roasts in punk history:
"You know, I saw you two guys earlier at the Good Humor truck. And you were eating your ice cream like little boys, and I thought, 'Those guys aren't so tough; they're eating ice cream. What a bunch of swell guys! I saw you eating cream, pal. Oh, don't you deny it, you were eating an ice cream cone. You're bad now, but you were eating an ice cream cone and I saw you. That's the shit you can't hide, you know? You got your fucking tough-guy shit, but you eat ice cream. Everybody knows it. The whole fucking place knows it. Ice cream-eating motherfuckers, that's what you are!"
The entire crowd of thousands of people erupted into massive laughter and cheered. The spell of the "tough guy hardcore persona" was instantly, brilliantly shattered. The two guys, utterly humiliated by the revelation of their dairy-induced vulnerability, stopped fighting immediately.
To this day, the audio of Guy Picciotto yelling "Ice cream-eating motherfuckers!" is a legendary piece of punk rock lore.
