Bollywood to Binge-Watching: India's Shocking Anime Obsession

Forget cricket for a second, because India has apparently found a new obsession: anime. Yes, the land of epic sagas and vibrant dance numbers is now completely smitten with Japanese animation, and honestly, we're a little surprised (and thoroughly entertained). It turns out that a nation once seemingly content with Shin Chan and Doraemon reruns is now devouring Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan like it's the last biryani on Earth.

According to those in the know (read: Crunchyroll, the anime streaming giant), India is now their second-largest market globally, surpassing even the US. Let that sink in. Americans, who practically invented the concept of endless binge-watching, are being out-watched by a country that just recently got fully on board. It seems that when Indians commit, they commit.

And why the sudden obsession? Well, apparently, it's not just the captivating storylines of Naruto or the existential dread of Death Note. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have flooded the market, and Crunchyroll is even dubbing shows into Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Yes, you can now experience Goku's Kamehameha in a language that truly hits home.

Even Bollywood's finest are jumping on the bandwagon. Apparently, stars like Disha Patani and Tiger Shroff are out there proclaiming their love for Dragon Ball Z, with Shroff even citing Goku as his fitness inspiration. So, while you were busy wondering if Koffee with Karan would ever return, millions of Indians were busy learning about chakra and titan anatomy. It’s a brave new world, and it’s gloriously animated.
