Welcome to International Cosplay Day! While people have been dressing like fictional characters since 1939 (shoutout to sci-fi pioneer Forrest J Ackerman) and Japanese publisher Nobuyuki Takahashi officially coined the portmanteau "cosplay" in 1984, International Cosplay Day was officially spearheaded in 2010 by Jennifer Alice. Her goal was wonderfully simple: build a global, unified holiday for makers, geeks, and craft nerds to strut their stuff regardless of their fandom or zip code. Fast-forward to August 29, 2026, and the holiday was bigger than ever! Social media exploded into a glorious avalanche of sewing tutorials, armor-sculpting flexes, and hilarious "cosplay vs. reality" memes.
